Pack Your Bags and Walk

- added 8 May 2009

Over the Easter break 12 Scouts packed their rucksacks and set off from Guildford railway station to the New Forest as part of the Annual District Back Packing Expedition. The party arrived at High Ashurst station at lunch time on day one and split up into small walking groups to make their way to Ferny Crofts Scout Camp site via various routes carrying all the food and accommodation they would need for the next 3 days. The groups arrived at the camp site during the early evening in various states of muddiness and set about pitching tents and cooking dinner.

Waking early the next day they cooked breakfast, re-packed their homes into their rucksacks and set off once again over various routes depending on individual experience and challenge. There were some that opted for a less challenging route only to find that the leaders thought they should do a little more, sorry girls! All of the 42 young people arrived safely that evening at Foxlease, a Girl Guide camp site which is on the outskirts of Lyndhurst, some of them having walked up to 20kms. Most were a little quieter that night but were in good spirits still and all tucked into their remaining evening meal cooked over several trangia stoves.

Our final day saw the groupings change a little for the hike back to High Ashurst once again via many different routes although most met up at lunch time to spend much of mid-day break playing in or around the start of the Beaulieu river. Following lunch all the groups walked the remaining few kms to the train station, most calling in at the only shop they passed over the 3 days to spend a pound or two on ice creams and sweets.

The return train journey was a much more subdued trip, probably due to the many kms walked.

The group would like to pass on their thanks to Jeff Wright and the other leaders that supported them during their walking but also in the hours spent organising the expedition.

Ripley Scouts Pull to Victory

- added 6 May 2009

A team of Ripley scouts took up the challenge laid down by Send Scouts for a return match of Tug-O-War at this years Send May Day Festival on the Recreation Ground in Send. Our team which followed a strict training regime under the control of our Head Coach and former Tug-O-War champion for British Aerospace Fred "digum in" Hookins (father of our chairman). The team that was selected from all the scouts had to have a total age of 100 years or less met for their final practice on Saturday morning and was able to show their grit a determination to out pull a team of dads, much to everybody's surprise except of course the coach.

On the day our team of Tom, Toby, Harry, Harvey, Fiona, Ella, David, Flora and Matt were full of adrenalin and our coach Fred "digum in" was full of confidence when he saw how our team set themselves up for the first pull. As the first pull was about to start tension grew but within seconds our team were leaning back and pulling to victory. The boys and girls went on to pull to a 3 - 0 overall victory.

Despite this their second defeat in a row Send Scouts have vowed to train hard for a return match at the Ripley event where it is also hoped to get respective Cub teams to take part to expand the event.

Well done one and all and get those boots ready as Send will be pulling even harder next time. There are a couple of pictures in the gallery.
