The Group which was first registered on the 24th June 1909 had commissioned a totem pole with local artist Graham Hart which was made from a larch tree donated by Sir Richard Thornton the former Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. The ceremony, which formed part of the group's centenary camp, culminated in a traditional camp fire. The Group were honoured to have Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the grandson of the founder of the Scout Movement, unveil the unique pole. Lord Baden-Powell a former Ripley resident and scout leader in the village went on to entertain the assembled guests with his interpretation of a traditional North American greeting. During the weekend the bell from the old Ripley Fire Station was also rung for the first time for many years following its restoration. The bell is now installed in the Scout HQ in an oak frame made by Matthew Phillips an Explorer Scout and the rope used to ring it was made by Howard Denyer of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Throughout the weekend the current Beavers, Cubs and Scouts along with their families enjoyed the glorious weather and many activities organised for them. There are now some photos in the gallery of the event. - added 8 May 2009 This year's St Georges Day Parade at Guildford Cathedral was attended by 40 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts along with leaders from all of our sections on a fine day in this our groups 100th year. The group was led up Stag Hill by Eric Duncan our Assistant Group Scout Leader and each section was led by the flag bearers Elisabeth Peak, Ronan Goss and Peter Hill. The flags from both Guildford East and West Districts were led into the Cathedral by Amy Yeo and Bertie Ayears both of whom are Scouts from Ripley. The two girls were left to lead the entire parade unaided due to my own departure very suddenly at the start of the service due to a large fire in SE London, well done girls. It was very pleasing to see so many well turned out young people representing the group, well done. - Richard Ayears Group Scout Leader Ripley Scouts win award for communication - added 20 Jan 2009 1st Ripley Scout group have won the Gerald Beck Memorial award for communication.
