Scouts Pull To Magnificent Victory

- added 20 July 2008

A Team of Ripley's finest Scouts under the leadership of Bradley Conisbee pulled their way to a magnificent 3 - 0 victory over Send Scouts in the Tug-o-War competition at this years Ripley Event. The team of eight made up of four boys and four girls dug in deep to out pull the opposition across the line, which was judged by Police Community Support Officer Edline Kaunda in the main arena on the green. The crowd cheered both sets of competitors but support for the local team did appear to out shout the boys and girls from Send.

As a result of our win, we received a cheque for £60 from the Send and Ripley Rotary Club. Pictures of our winning team can be seen on the gallery page.

No Wash Out in Wales

- added 6 June 2008

Contrary to popular belief Wales was almost dry for the seven days we spent in Llandinam, Powys at the end of May for our Annual Summer Camp this year. We travelled to Wales with 20 Scouts and arrived to find a beautiful site situated on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains and enjoyed a week concentrating on exploring the local area mainly on foot.

All of the Scouts took part on the Monday in a cooking competition which formed part of the Camp Cooks badge which was won by Hawks. Tuesday saw us visiting an activity centre where all enjoyed the High Ropes experience during the morning with many tackling the "leap of faith" and "Jacob's Ladder" and the afternoon saw them building rafts to "cruise" Langorse Lake. Some rafts were more successful than others, one lasted two minutes, one needed urgent repairs after ten minutes but Taylor's lasted the distance and stormed to the finish in first place.

Six of the older Scouts undertook a two day expedition commencing on Wednesday in the hills, camping at a remote site however they saw little of the first day due to the low cloud, on the second day they enjoyed much better weather. Several stories emerged about the hike however most of them revolved around walking in circles and Welsh farmers selling walking sticks.

The remaining Scouts undertook a hike on the Thursday near Llyn Cllywedog Reservoir and climbing to the top of Bryn-y-Fan in glorious sunshine. Friday saw all re-united and enjoying a visit to the Centre for Alternative Energy as well as Aberystwyth where they enjoyed spending much of their "tuck" money. Friday evening saw our annual entertainment evening which culminated in an imaginative performance of "Indiana Bone's" by Robyn and her Patrol that had been scripted by Alex.

Our thanks are extended to Alex, Eric and Hilary for their support and effort that allowed the Scouts to have such a good week.

New Scouts Invested

- added 15 Mar 2008

On Friday 14th March in the presence of Bernard Pentecost our Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts we welcomed 3 new Scouts into the Troop at a small ceremony at end of the evening. The new Scouts Fiona Baker (Hawks) Matthew Smitherman (Ravens) and Ruaridh Wilkinson (Cobras) were escorted to the ceremony by their Patrol and Assistant Patrol Leaders. The young Scouts were handed their badges and progress books so all they (not mum) have to do now is sew them on!!!!!!!!!

Packman Flag Update - Good News For Ripley

- added 20 Feb 2008

Following a check of the timings we now have a revised result with the Ripley A team being placed 4th and our C team being pushed back to 5th place. The A team was made up of Robyn Dean, Emily Batterbury, Matthew Burton and Georgia Meek. This amended result places all three of our teams in the top 7 places which is a really good result. Well done the A team and well done the C team but better luck next year!

Great Effort at the 2008 Packman Flag Competition

- added 10 Feb 2008

On Saturday 9th February three teams from the Group took part in the District Night Hike Competition based this year around the Blackheath area on one of the clearest nights for years.

The teams set out from Wonersh Scout HQ from around 6:30 PM and completed a circular route arriving back in Wonersh from around 11:30 with the last teams getting back at about 3:00 in the morning. At each of the checkpoints along the route they completed a range of challenges including Building a Rope Bridge, finding parts of a bike and assembling it and creating a giant "trash art" picture. Our best performing team led by Alex Eller with Tom Wigfall, Ella Finley and Verity "Bertie" Ayears were placed a credible fourth and pictures of the three teams are on the gallery page.

Full results are shown in the attached files.

District Cooking Competition 2008

- added 27 Jan 2008

The 2008 District Cooking Competition organised by Bernard Pentecost and his team took place on Saturday 26th January and a total of eight teams from around the District took part.

The Ripley team consisting of Alex Eller, Mathew Burton, Ella Finley and Alex Young cooked their recipe of Cream Cheese and Chive dip with Crudites for a starter followed by Meatballs in a Tomato Sauce with Pasta on time and with good organisational skill which went down well with the judges however the meatballs unfortunately fell apart during the serving which detracted from their excellent work throughout the day.

When it came to the final results our team were placed fourth overall but did receive the trophy for "entering into the spirit of the competition". Our four young people represented the Group extremely well and were a credit to the rest of the Troop, well done the four of you.

Hawks Tramp Supper Wins The Day

- added 21 Jan 2008

On Friday the Scouts took part in our annual cooking competition in the HQ as a forerunner to the District event next week.

Each patrol was provided with identical recipes and ingredients this year however they were allowed to present it in their own style. The recipe was a pasta mushroom creation followed by banana pancakes. The patrols were given 40 minutes to prepare and serve their main course for four people and their sweet was to be served 15 minutes later. All five patrols were extremely well organised and the main courses were served up on time. The table layouts ranged from an elegant formal table presented by Buffaloes to a tramps supper from Hawks.

The sweets were a little more problematical and left the judges with a dilemma whether to eat or drink the "pancakes". The final winners were Hawks who were the only patrol to produce four pancakes that were pancake looking.

All of the patrols deserve a well done as they all worked extremely well as teams with the noise levels demonstrating the enthusiasm they all showed. The evening proved to be one of the most successful cooking competitions ever and all four of the leaders thoroughly enjoyed the hard work our young people put into this very successful evening.

Well done patrol leaders and your patrols. Some photos of the event can be found on our gallery page.
