Summer Camp 2011

- added 27 Nov 2011

This year's Summer Camp was held at Broadstone Warren Activity Centre in the Ashdown Forest where 18 Scouts enjoyed the experience of one of the largest camp sites in the southeast of England. We were blessed with good weather which enabled all the weeks catering to be carried out cooking on open fires without too much of a challenge. During the week long camp the Scouts were joined by Hungry Hill Explorers who were also camping at Broadstone. Several of the older Scouts joined the Explorers for two days to take part in a lightweight overnight hike across the Ashdown Forest where they navigated their own route and shared an overnight camp site.

Throughout the week the Scouts took part in many of the on-site activities which included a high ropes activity session, grass sledging, rafting, artificial pot holing, gladiator challenge, crate stacking, climbing, hiking and swimming. At the end of the week we all had a day trip to Eastbourne where during the afternoon the Scouts were entertained by the air show which included fly pasts by WW2 aircraft and a wing walking display.

New Forest PLs Hike

- added 25 Oct 2011

At the start of the recent school holiday six of the PLs & APLs took part in a 2-day hike and lightweight camping expedition in the New Forest. The group set off from the Pickett Post heading for Wilverley Cottage Camp Site which was to be their base overnight. During the first day the group found themselves following one of the many animal paths which inevitably ended up in one of the many New Forest bogs, much to the groups enjoyment!

After eventually circumnavigating Cranes Moor they got back on track and made camp around 4:00pm. They tucked into a hearty meal of pasta with custard and dried fruit for pudding. Refreshed after a good night's sleep they set off on day two which took them towards Brokenhurst before heading north towards Lyndhurst. Along the way they managed to track down an ice cream van before they enjoyed the delights of the packed lunch they had made. Day two of the hike was completed just after 3:00pm when they met the minibus just outside Ashurst station, picture above. The group carried all their own equipment and supplies for the 2-day hike and successfully navigated a 25km route to a standard equal to that of a DofE Bronze award and all at the age of just 13, well done.

Packman Flag Success

- added 25 Oct 2011

Great Teamwork Leads To Success

A team of four Scouts from Ripley took part in the 2011 Packman Flag Incident Hike Competition and through their excellent teamwork achieved second place overall. The team made up of Emily, Hope, Thomas & Luke set off on the hike in near perfect conditions from Wonersh Scout HQ navigating their way round a 7 mile route in the dark. At each of the checkpoints they were faced with a challenge which through their training and good teamwork returned the best score for all the incidents faced. They were pipped to first place by a team from Horsley Scouts who managed to keep slightly better timings along the route across Blackheath.

Success Dished Up

- added 16 Feb 2011

A team of four Scouts achieved first place in the annual Scouts Cooking Competition at the start of February in a stiff competition against 12 other teams from the Guildford area. The Ripley team made up of Emily, Hope, Jennifer and Luke prepared, cooked and served Beef Stroganoff as their main course followed by what the judges described as the best sweat in the 12 years of the competition, a Banoffee Pie creation. The group demonstrated a creative flair and excellent team work throughout the two and a half hour competition and rightfully deserved their first place just one point ahead of a team from Horsley Scouts.

Both Emily & Hope had entered the competition before and had previously achieved success in gaining "the spirit of the competition award" which Ripley Scouts had won on several occasions in previous years. The team had clearly learnt from their previous attempts and were a credit to the group in their mature attitude towards the competition and demonstrating that you must still have fun in Scouting.

Well done.
